Systems & processes - The magic hour and arctic Light

Talking about the magic hour reminded me of arctic light.  The harbour photographs below were taken at about 11pm in Northern Norway - the magic hour can last a long time in the arctic!

At the other extreme, this snow scene was taken in Finnish Lapland in January (the camera was still working at -26) when the magic hour can be all the daylight you get..

The light is so good in the arctic because the atmosphere is free from pollutants and haze and the low sun casts a warm light (golden light).  In his article Pristine Yet Imperilled (AG Magazine 56) Olaf Willoughby, who photographs in the Antarctic describes the light as "an artist's dream"  http://www.olafwilloughby.com/
